The mission of the Department of Criminal Justice is to equip students with the knowledge they will need to become an integral part of criminal justice agencies, as well as to prepare students for professional advancement or further graduate work in criminal justice or a related field.
Xavier offers two 100% online program options:
Master of Science in Criminal Justice
The Master of Science in Criminal Justice program is designed for students interested in studying the theory and practice of criminal justice in law enforcement, courts, corrections, and the private sector.
The Master of Science in Criminal Justice program places an emphasis on criminal justice administration. The primary job of a criminal justice administrator is to provide oversight and supervision in matters related to crime and justice. Today, there is an ever-increasing demand for qualified criminal justice administrators in public and private sector organizations to keep them efficient and effective.
Xavier’s master’s program is specifically tailored to those interested in middle and upper-level management. Emphasis is placed on developing management skills such as public relations, accounting, finance, human resources, policy formulation, budgeting, human interaction, crisis strategies, organizational behavior, and writing skills.
The program is designed for the busy working professional, providing the following:
- Courses are offered fully online
- Full-time students can complete the degree in one year
- Part-time students can complete the degree in two years
- 6 starts per year
- Quick admission as a non-degree student to get started in the program
Many graduates of the program enter into doctoral programs and law schools to further their education.

The criminal justice program at Xavier University provided me with exceptional knowledge in one of the most important academic fields of our time. The critical thinking skills I developed from this program continue to play a vital role in my ability to detect, deter, and disrupt foreign intelligence services and terrorism activities within the Department of Defense.

Certificate in Criminal Justice Administration
Xavier’s 100% online Certificate in Criminal Justice Administration is tailored for students seeking to enhance their proficiency in administrative roles at the middle and upper management level. The certificate focuses on management skills in accounting, human resources, and policy formulation and can be completed within one year. Classes are intentionally kept small to facilitate interaction between students and faculty resulting in a dynamic learning experience.
Students who successfully complete the 9-credit certificate are eligible to apply for the master’s in criminal justice program.
The online Certificate in Criminal Justice Administration is designed to fit a busy schedule, and is perfect for:
- professionals who have a graduate degree, and are interested in coursework in administration to advance in the field, and
- those with an undergraduate degree who want to earn a certificate to advance in the field with credits that can be applied toward the master’s degree.
